On March 8, 2025, the Living Together Institute joins the global community in observing International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honouring the resilience, achievements, and ongoing struggles of women and girls worldwide. This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, is a powerful reminder of the importance of gender equality as an essential human right—a right that should be safeguarded for every woman and girl, regardless of background, identity, or circumstance.

As an organization committed to monitoring human rights abuses and offering support to those affected, the Living Together Institute has long been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of women and girls across the region. We recognize that despite significant strides, many women continue to face disproportionate challenges. Barriers to education, economic opportunities, healthcare, and political participation remain prevalent. The persistence of gender-based violence, wage disparities, and discriminatory cultural practices means that women’s ability to participate fully and equally in society is still severely limited.

The Urgency of Action

International Women’s Day is not merely a time for reflection; it is a day to take action and push for tangible progress in the fight for gender equality. To achieve true equality, we must all work together—governments, civil society organizations, and individuals alike—to remove the structural barriers that continue to impede women’s rights and opportunities.

At the Living Together Institute, we call for bold steps to address these issues:

  • Strengthening legal protections for women to safeguard them from violence, exploitation, and discrimination.
  • Promoting equal access to quality education, fair wages, and leadership roles to ensure women can realize their full potential.
  • Empowering women economically through support for female entrepreneurs, equal pay, and workplace equality.
  • Enhancing women’s political participation, ensuring that women’s voices are amplified in decision-making spaces, from local councils to national governments.
  • Providing support for survivors of gender-based violence, ensuring access to justice, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery.

Standing in Solidarity with Women and Girls

The Living Together Institute stands in solidarity with all women and girls—especially those who face the hardest challenges, such as human rights defenders, activists, and survivors of abuse. These women show incredible courage and determination as they fight for justice and equality, often at great personal risk. Their strength and resilience inspire us to continue amplifying their voices, documenting human rights violations, and advocating for policies that support a more just and equal society.

On this International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where every woman and girl is free to live with dignity, security, and opportunity. The fight for women’s rights is not just a fight for women; it is a fight for the betterment of society as a whole. When women thrive, entire communities and nations thrive. Equality is not a distant aspiration—it must become a lived reality for all women and girls.

A Call to Action

At this crucial moment, we call on governments, civil society, and every individual to move beyond words and take meaningful action. A society that values and invests in its women and girls is one that is more prosperous, peaceful, and just. Let us work together to build a world where rights, equality, and empowerment are not just ideals, but guarantees for all.
