The civil society space is shrinking. Organizations that once championed human rights, democracy, and social justice are facing growing challenges—operating in silos, lack of proper documentation, overdependence on donors, gender imbalances, infiltration, and even internal toxicity.
But here’s the thing: young people are stepping up with fresh ideas, new energy, and innovative approaches that could transform the sector.
At our recent Living Together Institute workshop, youth participants didn’t just discuss these challenges—they critiqued, questioned, and explored solutions to make civil society more effective and sustainable.
Why Youth Leadership in Civil Society Matters
🚀 Fresh Perspectives: Young people are digital natives, bringing tech-driven, innovative solutions to old problems.
🤝 Collaboration Over Competition: Unlike traditional structures, youth-led initiatives prioritize partnerships and open networks.
📢 Brave Voices: Young activists are fearless in calling out injustices and holding power to account.
🔄 Sustainability: The future of civil society depends on the next generation learning, leading, and restructuring it for long-term impact.

What Needs to Change?
🔹 Breaking the Silos – Civil society must move from isolated efforts to more collaborative and intersectional approaches.
🔹 Telling Our Stories – Proper documentation and storytelling are crucial for visibility and impact.
🔹 Less Dependency, More Sustainability – Overreliance on external donors weakens the sector. Youth-led initiatives must push for alternative funding models.
🔹 Diversity & Inclusion – Gender balance and inclusive leadership must be prioritized to avoid replicating existing inequalities.
🔹 Resisting Toxicity & Infiltration – Internal politics and external threats weaken movements. Transparency and accountability should be non-negotiable.
The Call to Action 🚀
The youth are not just the future; they are the NOW. They are ready to reshape civil society with bold ideas, digital solutions, and fearless advocacy. If given the space, support, and resources, they WILL make a difference.
